Tips for asking for consent

On Behalf of | Mar 4, 2022 | Sex Crimes |

Before a sexual encounter with someone else, it’s important to ask for consent. In fact, this is one of the best ways that you can avoid later being accused of any type of criminal activity. As long as you’ve communicated clearly with the other person and gotten their consent to proceed, then you know that they are not going to believe you’re taking advantage of them or anything of this nature.

That being said, people can often feel like asking for consent is a bit awkward or difficult to do at the moment. Here are some tips that can help you so that you can protect yourself.

Simply ask questions

Focus on asking questions and giving the other person a chance to respond and give you feedback. Show that this is an open conversation where they’re just as involved in it as you are. Ask them if they have any questions for you. Making it a two-way street can make things feel less awkward because you both know that you’re doing what makes you feel comfortable in the long run.

Set boundaries early

You can avoid having an awkward conversation in the heat of the moment if you’ve already talked about boundaries early. What do both of you want? What do you expect to happen? When everyone knows and is on the same page, then you can let the rest of the encounter happen organically.

Remember that things can change

Throughout the entire experience, remember that your partner can withdraw their consent or change those boundaries. They should communicate this clearly with you, and you should respect it.

Doing all of this can help you avoid any legal charges, but there’s no guarantee. If you are facing such charges after an encounter, you absolutely need to know about all of your legal rights and how to protect your future.
